The Treachery Of Images
The other day, I came across this absent minded doodle on the side of a Fitzroy workshop and I though to myself - Well Monsieur de Saussure would have a few words to say to this young Melbournian (if he were alive and could speak English.)
As Magritte clearly demonstrates, the correct captioning for such an artwork is "This is not an umbrella", or if you are feeling a little more Euro:
