Pansy-Ass Cowbois

Okay, Willie Nelson released his cover of Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly, Fond Of Each Other around Valentine's day and it has been doing the rounds since. The original song was written by Ned Sublette back in the early 80s.

Most sites though neglect to mention dear old Pansy Division who covered the song themselves back in 1995.

It is sorta cool that Pansy Division, who have made a career out of subversive queer punk pop covers of classic songs like Son Of A Preacher Man and Smells Like Team Spirit are now having their covers re-covered by artists of such prominance as Willie.

Willie's version gets bonus points for gush. According to a press release:
Adding to the track's poignancy is the fact that David Anderson, Nelson's longtime tour manager, revealed his homosexuality to Nelson two years ago.

"This song obviously has special meaning to me in more ways than one," Anderson told the Dallas Morning News. "I want people to know more than anything--gay, straight, whatever--just how cool Willie is and ... his way of thinking, his tolerance, everything about him."

Awww.
