Sadly, the report is correct. Our esteemed (and largely illiterate) Education Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich has decreed that, as of 2007, all forms of denim will be 'banned'. Essentially, this means that students wearing denim will be prevented from going on school excursions (as they cannot be prevented from attending lessons). The supposed justification is the "fashion trend" argument to end competition between students, and thus save parents money.

While a majority of parents agree upon having a dress standard (usually involving jeans), most do not agree with having the equivalent of a private school "uniform", primarily because it would be very expensive!

This is the same Minister who has pushed for the adoption of an "outcomes-based" marking scheme, predicated on the idea of individual improvement, rather than an objective standard (i.e. if a D student student improved to a C, he/she would be awarded the equivalent of an A). A great idea until the student applies for Uni, or (God forbid) comes up smack against reality.

I think the Honourable Minister is obviously working through some issues from that one year back in 78, when she flunked social studies, and despite all of her pleas to Santa, never got that denim jacket for Christmas.

That's a pretty effective 'ban' because excursions happen so often, and since the majority of excursions have to be tightly linked to the curriculum, I am sure an argument could be made that they are lessons in their own right and not to be missed.

It is prudent that the good Minister is trying to put a stop to these outrageous modern fashion "trends". Frankly, I think that all students should wear Bata Scouts, 5 Days in Rio underwear and Bonds t-shirts. Hell, at the begining of the school year each student should receive a $20 Target clothing coupon.
